Dental Implants
Having a nice set of teeth not only allows one to enjoy their food, but also gives one a greater sense of confidence and smile. However, losing one’s teeth can be a source of concern for many people, especially if you are a Singaporean who enjoys his or her food! Teeth many be extracted for many reasons and the gap left by the missing tooth or teeth can be unsightly or cause chewing problems. Fortunately, these missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants.
Dental implants consist of titanium screws that are placed in the jawbone to support prosthesis crown or bridge. This acts to replace a missing tooth or several teeth.
There are 2 parts to a Dental Implant:
- Implant screw – This is a titanium alloyed screw that is placed into the bone to support the crown. It is similar in function to the roots of natural teeth.
- Crown – This is the part that replaces the crown of the tooth for aesthetics and function and is located above the gum
The benefits of having a dental implant include:
- Improved confidence and smile
- Improved chewing efficiency
- No more discomfort and inconvenience from wearing dentures
- Provides lip support
- Prevents bone loss
- A thorough history and examination including x-rays is first performed to evaluate the general dental condition of your teeth, bone and gums
- Once the examination and investigations are completed, the various implant solutions and treatment phases will be explained and discussed
Most people should be able to receive dental implants. However, there are certain risk factors which can affect the success rates of dental implant therapy. These risk factors include heavy smoking, certain medical conditions like diabetes, medications e.g. bisphosphonates and radiation therapy to the jaws.

- If so desired, IV sedation services or even a general anaesthesia at private hospitals can be arranged
- The dental implant is left to osseointegrate within the jaw bone for 2 – 3 months
- After this 2 – 3 month period, a dental impression is taken to allow the fabrication of a dental crown
- The dental crown will be secured over the implant to replace your missing tooth
